George Meegan’s unbroken walk from the southern tip of South America to the northern point of North America between 1977 and 1983 gained wide media coverage and grabbed the attention of continental America. The journey has since been documented in his book, The Longest Walk, a real-life story of adventure, perseverance, and triumph.
Author Reputation Press is proud to have collaborated with George on the production of the book trailer for his memoir. The trailer puts in action some important highlights of his voyage, including the 41 million steps he has taken, 12 and a half pairs of hiking books expended, his crossing of the extremely impassable Darien Gap, and eight world records. But perhaps the most memorable part of his journey is marrying his Japanese sweetheart, Yoshiko. They eventually produced two children, Geoffrey and Ayumi.
In addition, the book chronicles his 19,019-mile trip across the Americas on foot from Tierra del Fuego to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. He was 31 when The Longest Walk culminated. The voyage was completed in 2,425 days with 41 million steps. To date, George’s feat remains unmatched, even after more than three decades. After his journey, George was invited to appear on several television shows in the United States, including Larry King Live, CBS Morning News, and Good Morning America, among others. He was also featured on People Magazine.
In 1981, George was also invited by then U.S. President Jimmy Carter for a chat at his home in Plains, Georgia. This was followed by several meetings with high-ranking government officials. You can watch the book’s trailer below:
