US Review of Books praises TM Spivey’s “Carter and Ryder” for its unique view on autism
TM Spivey‘s Carter and Ryder: My Little Brother Has Autism! has received praise from the US Review of Books. In her review of the book, Olivia Farr zeroes in on the book’s unique viewpoint that could help individuals interact with their siblings with the same condition.
The children’s book tackles how a family deals with one of its kids with autism. The book was also praised for its rich and beautiful illustrations complementing the already riveting story. Farr writes:
The brotherly love and care shine through the words and images to create a full and supportive picture of family.
In particular, Carter, the older brother, served an important role in helping the family understand the situation of Ryder, who came to this world with autism. Farr notes:
This book illustrates the difficulty surrounding the identification and diagnosis of autism. Autism affects many families of all different races and walks of life. While people with autism may seem different, they are still full members of families with a lot to love to share. Spivey conveys this message beautifully through the eyes of young Carter, who frequently expresses his joy for and love of Ryder.
