Author Spotlight: George Meegan, author of “The Longest Walk”
George Meegan, author of The Longest Walk, walked 19,019 miles for more than seven years from the southernmost tip of South America to the Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
The account of his unbroken walk is detailed in his book: how he overcame the physical dangers and obstacles associated with the adventure. The expedition gained wide media coverage and grabbed the attention of continental America.
The author’s journey includes 41 million steps he has taken, 12 and a half pairs of hiking books expended, his crossing of the extremely impassable Darien Gap, and eight world records. But perhaps the most memorable part of his journey is marrying his Japanese sweetheart, Yoshiko. They eventually produced two children, Geoffrey and Ayumi.
He has appeared often in the press including the Today Show three times, CBS Morning News and on Larry King Live. He ran as an Independent candidate for the Gillingham and Rainham constituency for the 2010 General Election.
George was born December 2, 1952, in Hillingdon hospital near the London Airport.
