In the novel, Jacobus has a twin brother, Josephus, and is sold by his father to his relatives to become an apprentice in the family’s shipping business in Sicily. Josephus is left behind and Jacobus feels distraught at being far from his brother. Yet he will feel excited at the eventuality of seeing the world.
