Author Tips

How to begin your Chapter 1

There’s something enigmatic about a book’s first sentence. Writers can only endeavor to control that first part in order to leave a memorable and catchy line for readers, hoping to keep them reading till the last page.

The same is true with the first chapter. An exciting first chapter will surely draw readers so they will read the next one. Below are some tips to help authors create that magic in their first chapter.

Start in the action right off the bat

Your readers will always want to take part of the story, so your job is to let them experience some action that would set the rest of the book into motion. This can either be good or bad incidents that must be dealt with by your character.

Know when to introduce the backstory

Frontloading the backstory in the first pages of your book is not advisable. This will only exhaust the interesting facets of your character. The best way to introduce backstory is through phases. Know when to introduce your protagonist’s past, and this can be during moments when he or she is reflecting on a decision, or when they answer crucial questions in their lives.

Highlight your character’s voice in the beginning

Describing your character or a setting is only supplemental to the entire appeal of your first chapter. What will hook readers instantly is the voice of your protagonist. That is because this will help your readers relate to your character in a significant way.

At the end of the day, revising your first chapter is what makes for a better composition. Never settle with your first attempt. Constant collaboration with your editor or publisher can be of great help. And readers will ultimately reap the benefits of a good story.
