Tips for creating a fight scene in a story

Building an action scene in your story presents a couple of challenges, especially if it is your first time writing an action story. This genre requires building conflict in your plot so that it ends up in violence. With focus on physical activity, this genre makes so much use of weapons and fighting techniques.

Below are some tips to help you write a good action scene or a series of fight scenes:

Ensure a logical connection between your action scene and the story

Some action scenes can have no relation to the overall story and only sit there as fillers around which other plot elements center. The best way to go about it is to plan your fight scenes so that they move your story forward and align with the motivations of your characters.

Add a few technical details

Introducing specific details to your action scenes can help readers picture out what’s happening in your story. However, injecting loads of details can disrupt the long arcs in your plot and character that are necessary to keep the readers’ attention. The key is to add just enough amount of technical details, but not too many.

Use the first-person point of view

While majority of action scenes are written in third person to describe every detail from a character’s perspective, it is sometimes helpful to provide a visceral point of view of a fight scene by using the first person. This helps to tie your story to real life and promote a deeper, more personal level of engagement with the readers.
