Mahlon Palmer’s life story may soon hit the big screen with Destiny’s new movie treatment
Mahlon Palmer’s memoir, Destiny, is now a step closer to becoming a Hollywood film with the release of its movie treatment.
The book contains stories told by Palmer many years ago when he was lying in his hospital bed after a heart attack one hot morning.
His nurses would ask him to tell them tales from his many travels to different places.
For days, he told stories to both his visitors and medical attendants. After recovering, one of Mahlon’s visitors asked if he could write a book since his stories may not be heard in the hospital any longer once he returned home.
Destiny recounts the poverty that the Palmer family had gone through during the Great Depression at the same time when Mahlon was born.
Palmer was the youngest child of a poor farmer in New York, born under austere circumstances. He learned early to work hard and there was no time for school work, but he did pass the exam for high school graduation.
Due to financial constraints, Palmer’s parents advised that he join the military. In 1954, he enlisted in the US Air Force, where he barely passed the physical exam due to his heart condition. While assigned as a meteorologist to the weather station at Griffiss AFB, he met Joy Ann, who would become his wife.
This awe-inspiring memoir took a near-fatal heart attack and the encouragement of his nurses to be fulfilled. The author faithfully recalls his life adventures, including business travel near the Arctic Circle. Nonetheless, it shows his humility for taking little credit for developing the AUTEC, BMEWS, DEW, and CORT systems. Palmer considers his career the best gift of his life.
