Charles Campise, a rideshare driver-turned-author, shares his most memorable passenger throughout his career
Charles Campise completed more than three thousand road trips as a rideshare driver for Lyft and Uber in Austin, Texas, and its nearby places.
In his book, Adventures Of A Rideshare Driver, Campise shares a sentimental memoir of his work. Apart from ferrying passengers to their destinations, he also took on many roles that entailed helping in cases of emergency, such as taking someone to a detox center.
At other times, Campise also tried to explain local customs and history to his passengers and often recommended Texas cuisine to tourists. Among his memorable clients were dignitaries and soldiers. He even once chauffeur a newly-wed couple to their honeymoon destination.
But of all his passengers, there was one who stood out for some reason. Campise revealed: “I like most the young man, Khalid, who is an American citizen, Muslim faithful, and student of government at Texas State University. Khalid was born in New York when his mother was in America to get a Master’s degree. She is from a Middle Eastern nation. He has been a regular rider with me for the past three years. He is full of energy and great ideas. He is entirely faithful to the task of getting a great education and being of service to the American people.”
Campise still does a part-time job as a rideshare driver in Texas and still fills his journal with travel notes in between trips. He signed up for Lyft and Uber in June of 2014 after retiring from the Burke Center for Youth. That said, he never really considered driving a work since he enjoyed it so much.
