In celebration of the Black History Month in the United States (February 1 to March 1), we’re featuring a timely and compelling book written by Dr. Tyrone Waters, D.D.

YOU WOULD BE PARANOID TOO IF THIS HAPPENED TO YOU U.S. DESTRUCTIVE PRACTICES: A True Life Story Told By Dr. Tyrone Waters D.D., Drs. On The Subject Of Mental Health is a nonfiction work that tackles mental health racism and harassment against black men in the U.S.

The book chronicles the events leading up to the shooting of Dr. Waters by Portland Police during a mental breakdown outside his home in 2001.

He is a Gulf War Veteran who himself struggled with paranoid schizophrenia since 1995. Dr. Waters has never been shy about his condition and he always speaks publicly about his inner battle.

He and his mother, retired State Sen. Avel Gordly, received community service awards from the American Jail Association in 2010 at the Oregon Convention Center. It honors his courage in speaking publicly against the shootings in his town.

His book is an educational resource for people with mental illness as well as for law enforcement so they learn to deal with people with mental health issues in the most humane way.
