The US Review of Books applauds “Still Standing” by Paul Vollmin because the book is “the product of several years’ work, is based on scripture regarding the need for religious seekers to stand and prevail with God’s help”

In this unvarnished book, “Still Standing” chronicles the narrative of a life that begins as “ordinary” in practically every sense and quickly turns to become extraordinary, if at times wrong. Vollmin raised on a Canadian prairie farm, the son of a devout, hardworking mother and a firm disciplinarian father.

From a young age, he was expected to conduct manly farm chores. Attending church taught him that God expected him to do the right thing. However, by adolescence, he had uncovered a slew of wrongdoings, including addictions to pornography, gambling, and alcohol.

Surprisingly, he went to Bible college, with a distant desire to become a preacher. But he had a history of failures, like creating a “family friendly” pool hall that ended up being a major financial loss, among other things. After a complete psychiatric breakdown, he eventually developed a more structured lifestyle and accepted a renewed vision of Christianity, helping him to make further healing.

The US Review of Books’ Barbara Bamberger Scott acclaimed Paul Vollmin, the author, “Vollmin, still active in church life in his sixties, offers his accumulated wisdom along with his stark confessions, enlivened by a strong belief in biblical truth and God’s power to heal.”

Here’s an excerpt from the US Review of Books that highlights:

“He creates a lengthy metaphor for the sinner’s path, likening it to carrying around a bag of stinking garbage, then finding God, who seems not to notice the offending odors. He realizes that since God has entered the scene, the stink has begun to dissipate and finally disappears entirely. Vollmin has praise for his faithful, long-suffering, and courageous wife and has come to terms with and learned to love his strict father as he gains perspective over the years. His book, the product of several years’ work, is based on scripture regarding the need for religious seekers to stand and prevail with God’s help. It can provide rich material for Bible study for Christians of any age willing to examine their own lives as openly as Vollmin has done.”
