How many times have we let go of the countless “jokes” that, when undressed, reveal themselves to be discriminatory? How many times do we say, “It’s okay” to avoid escalating a fight and avoid being labeled as someone who doesn’t comprehend “boundaries”? How many times have we silenced the truth’s screams for fear of not being heard? How many words go unspoken because we assume the viewpoints of “minorities” (blacks) don’t matter? When does silence become a kind of violence?
“I Can’t Breathe” is a fictional novel set during the time when a video of George Floyd’s final moments and his dying words, “I Can’t Breathe,” became widely circulated. Its global significance is depicted in the story, as well as how individuals were emboldened to speak out against discrimination by organizing demonstrations and marches.
Khusboo, the novel’s protagonist and a lawyer, is sympathetic to women’s issues and has assisted many women who have been caught in abusive and oppressive relationships.
The novel also briefly covers racism in its different forms, such as workplace sexual harassment, nursing home negligence, and so on. Although most people face this, the narrative demonstrates that some people are capable of dealing with it, while others, such as Aadrika, a sensitive and frail woman, are not.
The novel is set against the backdrop of events in Khusboo and Aadrika’s lives, including how Anil, Khusboo’s father, deceives, betrays, and abandons them, but even in the midst of the darkness, there are hues of a rainbow of love and hope that gleam intermittently throughout the novel.
