Benji Cole of CBS Radio interviews the author of the book “Afro-American Me”, Sherryl Mccorkle

The author of the book “Afro-American Me”, Sherryl L. McCorkle, was interviewed by Benji Cole of CBS Radio. She shared that her book is her story in the form of poems and essays.

Sherryl McCorkle was born in 1970 in Dayton, Ohio. For the last 11 years, she has worked in the mental health and chemical dependency fields. She is a graduate of Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, and enjoys writing poetry, reading, and attending spoken word events.

As a mother of three boys and a daughter, her experience and life make up the inspiration for her book. “Afro-American Me” is a literary collection of poems and essays written by the author while she’s pursuing an associate degree in mental health and chemical dependency at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.

She used to think writing papers about self-inventory and awareness was a way of inducing a severe headache. She learned more about herself than she could ever imagine. The college has been more than just a means of obtaining a higher education; it has been a journey of discovering one’s true purpose and creative abilities.

In the interview, she shared two of her poems; one is entitled Striptease, a poem that she’d written for her three boys. Raising a kid is difficult enough, and Sherryl is raising three. She mentioned that she worked two jobs to keep them in a house, and she thinks that she can go to a strip club and make some money.

Sherryl’s poems and essays have a personal connection—something she knows about, a personal experience, how I feel, or her opinion about something.
