Author Conella Lyons’ family life started at Pittman Farm Edgecombe County in Whitaker, North Carolina. He was a young child involved in the daily operations of the sharecropping family lifestyle.
His chores were to go to the well to draw water. This water would be used for cooking, washing, and feeding hogs. The hogs lived in a pen down a path leading toward woods not far from the house. He would take slop to feed the hogs as a young child around 3 years old. This slop consisted of thrown-out pieces of unwanted items the family would place in a bucket.
He had so much spare time being a young child because his older relatives were in school or at work. His favorite time happened when the Candyman drove onto Farm selling everyone a variety of sweets. His ability to appreciate the value of getting and spending money began on the farm. He would find empty soda bottles anywhere imaginable and take these bottles to the country corner grocery store for a refund of money and candy.
“Natural Beauty” presents experiences the author experienced and insights he realized. His encounter with an officer of the law began early in life as an African American citizen in Poughkeepsie, New York. The first encounter happened on the second floor of Smith Street Projects in Poughkeepsie, New York. He was a young child going to elementary school on summer vacation from Warring School on Smith Street. His second-floor neighbor saw him in the hallway near her apartment. This African American woman accused him of taking pennies out of her apartment. This false accusation led to him having to deny this Lady’s claim to the city of Poughkeepsie police officers.
His teenage life led to an incident with the City of Poughkeepsie police department on Market Street. He was walking to visit his aunt on a Friday Afternoon. This police officer saw him walking and pulled up by the curbside. He did not hesitate to immediately run down the street. This intersection was in the downtown business section of Poughkeepsie, New York. The local police headquarters is right across the street from an intersection. His decision to run suddenly seemed to be the wrong choice. He decided the best imaginable choice was to turn around with his hands up.
This decision instantly became the right thing to do because the police officer already pulled out a gun. He spent the rest of the evening waiting in the jail cell until the family arrived to pay bail money. He was charged with Obstruction of Government Administration after seeing a judge in court.
