Young children always have life shown to them through pretty pictures, but in reality, life is not always perfect. When the children fall (down), Mom and Dad are not always there to catch them. And some falls hurt, and a kiss doesn’t stop the pain. As parents, there are so many important things we want to teach our children.
“Book of Hard Facts” by George Woerth is designed for parents to sit down with their children and show them what could possibly happen when they do things they are told not to do—when they don’t listen.
George Woerth, the author, was sitting in a waiting room and looking for something to read. There were a couple of children’s books, and that was it. He thumbed through them—the same books from sixty years ago. He thought he needed to do a children’s book that a parent could interact with.
So, he came up with “Hard Facts.” It’s compiled of things that mom and dad would tell you not to do, and like most children, it went in one ear and out the other. It was never retained in the brain. So, when your mom and dad weren’t around, you did it.
He talked to the ER nurses, and they gave him actual situations that happened over the years to children that did not listen. He found an artist and then came up with “Diputs” and acted out each possible rule, ending in possible death.
It’s not a perfect world, and you can’t wrap your children in bubble wrap. Nobody can watch their children 24/7. Kids will be kids, but with “Hard Facts,” you can go page by page with your child, and this time it won’t go in one ear and out the other.
