Bruce R. Kindig is a retired teacher residing in Davenport, Iowa. He has taught various history classes in his 46-year career, spanning from junior high to community college. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in history from the University of Northern Iowa. As an accomplished author, he has received several book review awards.
Kindig wrote the book “Courage and Devotion” with the purpose of having the historical narrative separate from the stories of the men. If the reader wants to know about an individual, there are sections within the chapters about the officers and enlisted men. It is the intention of this book to describe the battery’s place in the grand scheme of things. On the maps in this book, there are marks that show the location of the battery at each battle.
In each chapter, after the narrative, there are descriptions of the officers and what they were doing, followed by information about the enlisted men. At the end of the book, there are several appendices that present lists of men for various times. The names are listed chronologically first, then alphabetically.
Bruce R. Kindig was recently interviewed by Benji Cole from CBS Radio to discuss the author’s message as well as his inspiration behind this book. Click on this link to listen to the full interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9QjTEmuiBs.
