The Publishers Weekly Magazine features “Charlie and the Elephant” by Loretta Beacham

Author Reputation Press is honored to be in partnership with Publishers Weekly Magazine in featuring and marketing excellent published reads written by dedicated and passionate authors. Millions of books are published, but only a few are featured by a credible and globally trusted magazine, Publishers Weekly.
Publishers Weekly, now celebrating its 150th anniversary, is familiarly known in the book world as PW and “the bible of the book business.” Focused on the international book publishing business, it is now a multimedia news platform with full horizontal coverage of book publishing, beginning with the author-as-creator to the publisher, printer, and distributor to the end consumer. Its varied products are targeted at publishers, booksellers, librarians, literary agents, authors, book lovers, and the media. It offers feature articles and news on all aspects of the book business, bestseller lists in a number of categories, and industry statistics, but its best-known service is prepublication book reviews, of which it publishes nearly 9,000 per year.
“Charlie and the Elephant” by Loretta Beacham, published by Author Reputation Press, was featured in the August issue of Publishers Weekly magazine. This masterpiece was nominated for the 2023 Eric Hoffer Book Award and commended by the US Review of Books, stating that “Beautiful illustrations reminiscent of a child’s crayoned drawings decorate each page of this delightful book. There is a playful, dreamlike quality to these pictures and the narrative itself, where such peculiar things happen as blue elephants whisking children away to forests or crows wearing glasses. It also feels very much like a story born out of the desire to coax a child into falling asleep. As with a certain little girl who refused to do so, Charlie tries to resist taking a nap and even ponders its importance. Even so, the enchanting nature of the plot and the melodic rhythm of each line give the impression of being gently rocked to sleep. These qualities make it the perfect bedtime or naptime adventure for parents to read to their little ones.”
The Eric Hoffer Book Award commemorates the memory of the famous American philosopher Eric Hoffer by honoring outstanding writing and the independent spirit of small publishers. Since its foundation, Hoffer has grown to become one of the most prestigious worldwide book awards for small, academic, and independent presses.
Last year, Loretta Beacham’s inspiring and engaging children’s book, “Charlie and the Elephant,” was featured in the November issue of The New York Times Book Review (NYTBR), a weekly paper magazine supplement to the Sunday edition of The New York Times (an American daily newspaper with a worldwide readership reported in 2020 to be a growing 6 million paid digital subscribers). It is one of the most well-known and significant book reviews in the business.
Recently, this book was among the books displayed by Author Reputation Press during the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books 2023 at the University of Southern California on April 22–23, 2023. This children’s book is about a child who cares about other creatures. This book is available in English, French, Spanish, and Russian editions.
Author Loretta Beacham appreciates sharing a fantastic story as a frequent visitor to her girls’ magical worlds. She was helped in this book by the nap-resistant imagination of her older daughter, the namesake Charlotte, who was almost four years old at the time. Loretta used her observations of her neighborhood’s environment to embellish and bring her characters to life.
Loretta Beacham lives in Ottawa with her partner, Adam, and their daughters, Charlotte and Violet. Several dust bunnies, several plush animals, a few board games, and stray LEGO parts are all part of family life.
Yvette Besner, the book’s illustrator, enjoys reading about generosity, so she was delighted to work with Loretta Beacham on this touching story. The funny and colorful pictures in “Charlie and the Elephant” were created by Yvette, a Canadian artist and illustrator. She and her two greatest creations, Leia and Serena, live in Ottawa with her husband, Shawn. Yvette can be found on the road with her family and friends, dreaming up ways to share joy when she isn’t working on art.
