“The Healing of My Soul” by Leia Hughey, Ph.D. is now available for purchase

“When I embarked upon my first personal therapy experience, I was almost devoid of trust for the mental health professions. Ironically, I was a senior in college majoring in psychology, and a registered nurse working in a psychiatric unit. My reasons for seeking therapy, so I thought, were related to my work in psychiatry. ”

Author Reputation Press is honored to publish “The Healing of My Soul: The Psychotherapy of an Incest Survivor” by Leia Hughey, Ph.D. This masterpiece reads like a stay-up-late-because-you-can’t-possibly-put-it-down mystery but should be a required textbook for college students in a wide array of majors, not just psychology. The book is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and the ARP website.
The purpose of this book is to chronicle a healing process that was founded upon an injury held in repressed memory, the details of which were fleshed out over a span of more than a decade. While it is a true story of the author, her healing process highlights universal elements of recovery that will resonate with survivors and be instructive to readers with any level of interest.
Author Leia Hughey, Ph.D., grew up in Kelso, Washington. After high school, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she attended college. She graduated from Georgia State University with her doctorate in 1987.
Since becoming a psychologist, she has practiced as both a private practitioner and in community agencies. Dr. Hughey and her husband currently reside on their small horse farm on the outskirts of Corvallis, Oregon.
Dr. Hughey continues to provide psychotherapy in her full-time private practice. She often includes her horses in her therapy process. She is certified as a mental health professional through EAGALA. She works with people of all ages.
Leia Hughey Ph.D. is also the author of Nothing Special: The True Story of Horses Inspiring Spiritual Transformation in the Most Unexpected Ways.
In “The Healing of My Soul: The Psychotherapy of an Incest Survivor,” the author courageously peels through layers of vulnerabilities and fears to bare herself to her readers. A victim of rape as a child, the author suffered from its psychological effects—low self-esteem and self-hatred—throughout her life, even though all recollection of the trauma was repressed from her conscious memory. It wasn’t until she was in college that the memories began to slowly and heartbreakingly work their way to the surface through dreams and flashbacks.
When the truth finally surfaced, healing for her meant finding out who could have done such a hideous thing to a young child. Weaving in powerful excerpts from her journal entries and including insightful contributions from the two therapists who were the most helpful to her, Hughey skillfully chronicles her journey from hopelessness to happiness. She shows that the psychological pain of childhood sexual abuse, though very real and entrenched within one’s psyche, can be overcome and that psychotherapy can be a successful tool in that process, even for a patient as resistant as this author was at times.
In reading her story, you’ll hurt for the little girl whose innocence and childhood were forever lost, but you’ll rejoice in the restored, whole adult who persevered against seemingly insurmountable obstacles and found healing, inner peace, and forgiveness.
Above all, this is a story of courage and personal triumph.
