“Regular grateful thinking can increase happiness by as much as 25%,” claims recent research. Choosing to intentionally choose gratitude as an outcome of what we have resulted in an increase in happiness. Gratitude prevents envy and is the first step toward contentment. It is a strong force that can bring us happiness and fulfillment, even in the most trying situations.

Our inability to find contentment in any situation we find ourselves in is frequently the source of our misery and discontent in life. One of the most important things we can do to live a life free from being swept away by any unforeseen circumstance is to learn true contentment. Cultivating gratitude is a habit that is the key to finding happiness and serenity. Being grateful alters our viewpoint and uplifts our spirits, promoting a deep sense of contentment no matter what the day brings—the type of contentment that flourishes throughout all the highs and lows of life.

Author Eileen Mosimann is a retired Child Protective Social Worker/Supervisor; she has three grown children and seven grandchildren and lives with her husband in Northwestern Connecticut. Eileen started writing stories for each of her grandchildren, as each one was born as a gift for that child. While she has often considered publishing her work, Greener Pastures represents her first serious attempt at publication; look for more to come in the future.

“Greener Pastures: A Story About Toby, the Little Colt Who Wanted to Run Free” Toby is a two-year-old colt who lives on a ranch in Wyoming. Nearly every day he sees a pack of wild horses galloping by, free as the wind; he longs to join the herd and become what he considers “a real horse.” Toby gets the chance to join that herd of horses for some adventure, but he learns a valuable life lesson in the process.

Being thankful is a heart-centered attitude. Being mindful of what we have been given or kept is the foundation for being thankful. Nowadays, a great number of people are either stressed out, restless, or dissatisfied. True satisfaction sometimes feels unattainable, even though we know that God wants us to be happy no matter what. Where can we, then, find contentment? When that happens, how can we hang onto it? Learn from this story.
