“I’m Only Black” by Barbara Wicklman was among the books displayed by Author Reputation Press during the 2024 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (LATFOB) at the University of Southern California on April 20–21, 2024.
The LATFOB is considered to be one of the world’s most significant literary gatherings. It has been held every year since 1996 with the goal of bringing together the people who create books and the people who love to read them. It is attended by more than 550 authors, celebrities, storytellers, and hundreds of exhibitors.
The Los Angeles Times is the country’s biggest metropolitan daily newspaper, with more than 40 million unique latimes.com visitors monthly, a Sunday print readership of 1.6 million, and a combined print and online local weekly viewership of 4.4 million. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Times has been covering Southern California for more than 140 years.
Author Reputation Press once again showcased some of its amazing books in a wide selection of genres in this year’s LATFOB. This book gallery aims to connect readers and authors by exposing it at an event attended by audiences around the globe.
Barbara shared that she wrote this book for children to begin to understand that color black is a color, not a reason because of Halloween superstitions to exclude Black cats from being good pets.
The author additionally shared how she saw a black cat sprint onto the field during a baseball game in a stadium a few years ago. The audience began throwing beverages and popcorn at it while laughing and having fun. The cat was probably lost and needed help. It brought her to tears to see the cat feeling lost and just throwing things like that.
She wants children to learn from this book that black cats are wonderful pets rather than the “bad luck” that society portrays them to be.
“I’m Only Black” by Barbara Wicklman presents the story of Blackie, a fluffy black cat who wants children to know that black cats are wonderful pets. He tries to help children understand that cats who have black fur are the best! They are wonderful companions with loving hearts.
