He has an extensive library of historical texts and studied warfare at the University of California, Berkeley. He comes from a long line of veterans: two of his great-grandfathers served in the Union Army during the Civil War; a grandfather attempted to enlist in the Spanish-American War; and a father served in the Navy twice, once near the end of World War I and again during World War II.

After getting a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, the author developed weather and communication satellites for the aerospace sector.
