The US Review of Books recently announced the much-awaited results for the 2024 Eric Hoffer Book Award.

“When Sorrow Comes: What Can God, You, and Others Do to Help Cope with Grief?” by Dr. Richard Dew, published by Author Reputation Press, was one of the nominees for the 2024 Eric Hoffer Book Award. It was commended by Carol Anderson, D.Min., ACSW, MSW, of the US Review of Books, highlighting that “The author’s book is a good, basic look into grief and the process of grief. The advice on how to cope with one’s grief and help others to cope is one of the standouts of the book. By writing from his own experiences with the grief process, the author adds special insight into what it is like to go through such loss. He uses poetry and biblical quotes to add to the connection of healing, and there is much pertinent information on ways to cope and heal. The book is written from a Christian worldview, so it may prove especially valuable to Christian believers. Overall, it is a good read and may be helpful to many people.”

Eric Hoffer Book Award honors the memory of the great American philosopher Eric Hoffer by highlighting salient writing, as well as the independent spirit of small publishers. Since its establishment, the Hoffer has become one of the largest international book awards for small, academic, and independent presses.

The US Review of Books supports the Eric Hoffer Project by publishing the results of the annual Eric Hoffer Award for Books. The Eric Hoffer Award is judged by a separate panel, under the direction of the Eric Hoffer Project.

Richard Dew, MD, has been a family physician in east Tennessee for fifty years and is the author of “When Sorrow Comes: What Can God, You, and Others Do to Help Cope with Grief.” Following the murder of his twenty-one-year-old son, he became active in the Compassionate Friends, an international support group for families whose children have died. He is the author of three previous books: Medicine with a Human Touch, Rachel’s Cry: A Journey through Grief, and Other Side of Silence. He and his wife, Jean, live in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In this book, the author explains what grief is and how it affects the bereaved in simple language. He offers practical tips for dealing with the roller coaster of feelings that sorrow can bring—sadness, hopelessness, melancholy, guilt, and anger—and includes guidance for people who want to console friends, coworkers, or family members.

Lastly, this masterpiece was displayed at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2023 in Frankfurt, Germany, on October 18–22, 2023. It is reportedly known as the world’s largest trade fair for books and opened its doors to participants around the globe celebrating books and their authors.
