“Gold Nuggets and Other Gems from the Mine of Scripture” by Bob Leland was nominated for the 2024 Eric Hoffer Book Award

“Gold Nuggets and Other Gems from the Mine of Scripture” by Bob Leland, published by Author Reputation Press, was one of the nominees for the 2024 Eric Hoffer Book Award. This masterpiece was highly praised by Sherry Galetka of the US Review of Books, acknowledging that “Leland explains much of the history by correlating chapters from both the Old and New Testaments and expounds upon the way different books of the Bible build on each other. Sunday school teachers will appreciate the appendix, filled with quotes from notable authors, while the bibliography provides a source for those who wish to compare and contrast these works. After reading the author’s book, one can consider, with more understanding, how faith guides the true meaning of love. Leland applies his knowledge and research to many biblical dilemmas in which the curious will delight.”

Eric Hoffer Book Award honors the memory of the great American philosopher Eric Hoffer by highlighting salient writing, as well as the independent spirit of small publishers. Since its establishment, the Hoffer has become one of the largest international book awards for small, academic, and independent presses.

The US Review of Books supports the Eric Hoffer Project by publishing the results of the annual Eric Hoffer Award for Books. The Eric Hoffer Award is judged by a separate panel, under the direction of the Eric Hoffer Project.

Dr. Robert J. Leland, the oldest of five children, was born in 1942 to Gordon and Edith Leland and grew up in Oak Park, Illinois. He accepted the Lord as his Savior when he was just four years old and dedicated his life to foreign missions when he was six.

He received his B.A. degree in Secondary English Education from Northern Illinois University in 1966, his M.A. in Biblical Education from Columbia International University in 1971, and his D.Min. from Trinity International University in 1994.

He and his wife, (Ruth) Amber, served in Papua, Indonesia from 1971-2002 as church planters in the Citak tribe on the south coast, house parents at TEAM’s hostel for missionary children in Sentani on the north coast near the Papua New Guinea border, office administrator (Bob) and bookkeeper (Amber) in Manokwari, and the last nineteen years of their service at the Erikson-Tritt Theological College near Manokwari. They also spent nine months in Singapore (1996), teaching at the Asian Cross-Cultural Training Institute while awaiting their visa renewal for Indonesia.

His Major Project for his D.Min., Conformed to His Image, was translated into Indonesian and published in Indonesia. Upon his return from the field in 2002, he translated Mounce’s The Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament from English into Indonesian, which has since been published in Indonesia for use in Bible schools and seminaries where Greek is taught. He has also previously published The Saga of a Bent Nail, verbal “snapshots” of their 31 years in Papua, and Unexpected Transformation, a multi-use examination of the characteristics, titles, and names of Christ and how we are to reflect those in our daily lives.

The book “Gold Nuggets and Other Gems from the Mine of Scripture” by Bob Leland is more than just a compilation of Bible passages; it is a collection of questions about Scripture from both the Old and New Testaments, along with responses that might make readers even more eager to research any other questions they may have.
