“Lift Ev’ry Voice” by Lillian M. Whitlow celebrates every African American who made huge contributions to American history

Harriet Tubman, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Arthur Ashe, and Billie Holiday are just a handful of the many famous figures featured in this anthology of black life in America.

From Louis Armstrong’s early dive-bar days to Rosa Parks’ historic act of civil disobedience in Montgomery, Alabama, Whitlow regales her readers with the lives of African-Americans who are still talked about and celebrated today.

Lift Ev’ry Voice is an anthology of short biographies of various African Americans throughout history who have given America great abilities and talents in fields such as music, athletics, art, literary works, theater, politics, and other efforts.

These persons have influenced the development of our age and future generations. Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing does not seek to present every African American who has made significant contributions to our society, since that would be nearly impossible; rather, it is a selection of those who have.

Despite the fact that Lift Every Voice and Sing is about African Americans, it was intended for everyone to read and enjoy.

As this short selection of names reveals, the author’s scope extends beyond political agitators to include artists, musicians, athletes, and other public people from many walks of life, listed alphabetically.

Thus, dancer Josephine Baker follows writer James Baldwin, while musician and entertainer Fats Waller comes before educator and author Booker T. Washington. Some entries date back to 1766 (Pierre Toussaint, a freed slave turned New York City benefactor), while others, such as musician Michael Jackson, are more recent.

Whitlow has prepared a collection of resources that a young kid could find valuable for a school project, as each item offers thorough biographical information and spans each subject’s whole life.
