Dr. Tyrone Waters was born on January 9, 1966, at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon, weighing little more than seven pounds. His father is Neshelle Waters, a retired US Army Captain. His mother, Avel Gordly, is a former Oregon State Senator and a professor in Portland State University’s Black Studies Department.
He had a fantastic environment. He grew up with his mother, grandparents, and, on rare occasions, his father. His parents split when he was still a baby. In 1997, his father died of cancer, namely lung cancer, as a result of cigarette smoking. He went to Irvington Elementary School in the 1970s. In the 1980s, he attended Fernwood Middle School and Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland, Oregon, where he was raised.
During the Persian Gulf War in the 1980s, he served in the US Navy. He had the honor of serving with Captain Walter Davis, the first African American to command an aircraft carrier, aboard the USS Ranger. As an aviation structural mechanic in the Navy, he worked on planes and hydraulic systems on a variety of military aircraft. He received an honorable discharge, a meritorious unit accommodation, and a good conduct medal. After being discharged from the Navy, he returned to Portland, Oregon, where he was tormented by the Portland Police Department.
Dr. Waters was a Gulf War veteran who has battled paranoid schizophrenia since 1995. Over the years, he has always been candid about his struggles with this illness. He is an outspoken advocate for mental health issues. He is a Doctor of Religious Science and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity. He also holds the title of Certified Life Coach.
The author is currently based in Portland, Oregon. After a mental breakdown, Dr. Waters was shot by Portland cops outside his home in 2001. This interaction prompted him to write “You Would Be Paranoid Too If This Happened to You: U.S. Destructive Practices” to raise mental health awareness and educate law enforcement professionals on how to deal with people who are incarcerated for mental health issues.
