A fresh perspective on covetousness: “Why A Refuge” by Michael Allen George is now available for purchase

“Why A Refuge” by Michael Allen George was published by Author Reputation Press and is a compelling narrative that accurately portrays the difficulties that our society is still facing. This skillfully planned murder mystery thriller is set in rural Minnesota and features characters that are vividly developed.

Michael Allen George, the author, is a retired carpenter who has previously worked with the old mainframe computers, run an around-the-clock service station, run a small dairy farm, and even picked potatoes with seasonal farm laborers. They were married for more than 50 years and had five children, two of whom passed away recently. They’re returning to Minnesota soon.

This book is typically read in one sitting by murder mystery lovers. Other highlights are the poetry and extraordinarily poignant descriptions of the shelter; the heroes’ sharp and salty dialogue; psychological plausibility; and setting authenticity. The novel’s implied and occasionally explicit stance on political and social issues won’t appeal to everyone, but there is more than enough of the “good stuff” to keep the reader interested.

The main characters, Mack Thomas, is a former rodeo bull rider who recently retired due to a back injury, his struggling farmer father, and his uncle. The protagonists of this tale, “Why A Refuge,” are these “ordinary folk,” unpretentious, moral, and socially and environmentally concerned. They are up against an antiquated system of corruption operated by a local banker who has fallen from grace, the sheriff, and other evil forces who are working together to turn the neighborhood wildlife refuge into a resort and playground for the rich. These powers will use all means necessary to further their evil objectives, including major financial fraud, poisoning Mack’s father’s organic crops, and even murder.

Individually, the dark forces stand for social problems such as domestic violence. The focal point of this story is the wildlife refuge, the last remaining piece of central Minnesota’s once-pristine nature. It has rapidly diminishing wetlands, a plethora of species, and Thoreau personified nature in its most pristine and transcendental state. The novel, which was released in 2010, is prophetic. As the United States struggles in late 2018 with environmental degradation, deceit in the public and private realms, and corruption in all its manifestations, the criminal conspiracy that would ruin this Midwest Walden serves as a sobering story.

The protagonists of this narrative, Mack, his father, uncle, and two female friends, represent the morals and customs that stand in direct opposition to the evil forces. They are kind, sympathetic, and truly moral in contrast to the right-wing fundamentalism’s hypocrisy, in addition to being quiet and reserved in contrast to those who support darkness. It almost seems as if Trump himself were following this story in the background. Without being preachy, “Why A Refuge” effectively conveys these concepts. What makes a thriller is its plot. There is more than enough suspense and plot twists and turns to keep the reader turning the pages.
