The world needs reminders of the truth that has been said but forgotten, which begs for reconsideration, for as of now, it is still present—social injustices and racism.

The author, Minnie P. Stewart, grew up in Jackson, Mississippi. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Jackson State College in 1970. She was hired for her first teaching post in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1970. In her birthplace of Jackson, Illinois, she worked as a teacher for thirty years. A lot of us are tired of our society’s racial division. May the readers of this book listen to the pains and suffering of those who have continued to suffer discrimination at the hands of oppressors and racists, witnessing their broken hearts, and learn how we, from the outset, envisioned a reconciled multiethnic family in a loving community, reflecting the beauty and calming presence of humanity in the world.

In the midst of strife, separation, and uncertainty, humanity must be revealed more than at any other moment. Readers understanding the message of this narrative may choose to love, listen, learn, and lament. Then, leverage those resources and strengths to bring real, lasting healing and change.

After suffering and witnessing both overt and covert bigotry for many years, Minnie P. Stewart realized she had to speak up. Like so many others, she and her family had been secretly preserving their family history.

In this memoir, she recounts and reflects on how racism and oppression affected her and her family and how others helped them as they made an effort to help others.

To preserve her family’s heritage, the author produced “Hands within the Battle: My Mississippi History Second Edition.” Readers will be drawn in as they discover the secrets behind the smiles and melodies that Black Americans sing and grin amid overcoming obstacles in life. It is an inspiring example of how love and sacrifice can help a family survive adversity.
