Karl Milde recalled listening to The Lone Ranger at eight o’clock every Wednesday night on his family’s staticky radio (he lived on a farm far from New York City, where the signal was aired). Karl composed this book as a tribute to the great heroes of the aforementioned radio program because he was inspired by it. He sought to stay as true to the original Lone Ranger tale as possible, changing the names to Road Ranger and Toronto (a Latino who grew up in Toronto) and the horses to motorcycles. There are numerous pleasant surprises, genuine action, and a thoroughly gratifying conclusion to this superb piece.
Readers of “The Road Ranger” will get to know Tom Smith, the businessman and founder of “Road Wheels,” a tremendously successful firm that operates double-deck tractor-trailers with a distinctive design to transport people and their automobiles from one city to the next. Tom is assaulted, stabbed, and left for dead while following a car that his firm hauled north from New York City and unloaded at Niagara Falls, a car he thinks is smuggling contraband into Canada. Alonzo Sierra, a watchful border officer from Canada, saves his life by bringing him to a hospital in Toronto.
During his recovery, Tom makes the decision to fake his own death and carry on with his inquiry undercover, with only Alonzo and his company’s senior executives knowing his true identity. Tom travels from New York City to a distant island in the South Pacific by following a trail while concealing his face with a pair of silver aviator spectacles. He loses control of Road Wheels and inadvertently walks into their lethal trap as he draws closer to catching his assailant, a ruthless killer known as the “Enforcer,” and the Enforcer’s boss, a wicked woman who runs the smuggling enterprise.
In the course of his search, Tom encounters a number of people who are in need of his help. Whenever and wherever he sees injustice, he stops to defend the defenseless and hold the guilty accountable. A hero is created as Tom gradually discovers who he really is. He is now known as the “Road Ranger,” and he and his juvenile sidekick, Alonzo, whom he has given the name “Toronto,” are tasked with patrolling the highways in their all-black tractor-trailer and silver motorcycle.
