Readers who enjoy reading and expanding their knowledge of historical narratives and insights won’t be able to put this book down.
Bruce R. Kindig, the author of this book, is a University of Northern Iowa alumnus with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in history. Before retiring after 39 years of teaching, he worked as an adjunct professor at Scott Community College and taught US history in the Davenport, Iowa, Community School District. His debut book, “Courage and Devotion: A History of Bankhead’s/Scott’s Tennessee Battery in the American Civil War”, reflects his lifelong love for learning about the American Civil War.
Just before the Battle of Shiloh, this battle flag was presented to the battery. In order to keep the men’s stories separate from the historical account, the author wrote this book. There are sections about the officers and enlisted soldiers in the chapters if the reader wishes to learn more about a certain person. This book’s goal is to explain the battery’s position in the overall scheme of things. The locations of the batteries at each fight are shown on the maps in this book by markings.
Following the story in each chapter, there are descriptions of the officers and their activities, followed by details about the enlisted troops. There are multiple appendices that provide listings of men from various eras towards the book’s conclusion. The names are arranged alphabetically after being listed chronologically.
In the context of the American Civil War, this is a regimental history of a Confederate battery. This book provides a summary of every component of the battery, which was first assembled by Smith P. Bankhead in Memphis in 1861. This case study explores the men’s motivations for joining the group and offers background information. Despite the fact that the conflict is sometimes attributed to slavery, the majority of the soldiers fought for other causes as few of them had slaves. The book discusses the struggles of military life and training, as well as the reasons why some soldiers left, while others fought to the final whistle.
