The New York Times Book Review (NYTBR) features “Sunrise” by Kristin Abello

Kristin Abello’s inspiring read, “Sunrise,” was featured in the November issue of The New York Times Book Review.

Current non-fiction and fiction books are reviewed in The New York Times Book Review (NYTBR), a weekly paper magazine supplement to the Sunday edition of The New York Times (an American daily newspaper with a worldwide readership reported in 2020 to be a growing 6 million paid digital subscribers). It is one of the most well-known and significant book reviews in the business.

The author is a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. These are the words best used to describe the force that is Kristin Abello. She and her husband Raul Abello are the parents of two wonderful boys, Jacob (21) and Colin (17), and they currently reside in the city of Houston with their Golden Retrievers, Max and Lucy.

On any given day, you can catch Kristin participating in several outdoor activities or maybe just hanging out with her family at the beach. But life hasn’t always been so picturesque. What Kristin thought would be a routine run with her husband turned into an event that rocked Kristin and her family to their core. After being struck by a car, Kristin suffered a severe Traumatic Brain Injury. It has taken Kristin years to reconcile what was taken from her in mere seconds. But with determination and a positive attitude, Kristin has more than survived—she has thrived.

Alongside her beautiful family, Kristins’ list of accomplishments includes working at both Halliburton and Texas Children’s Hospital as an Exercise Specialist. Serving on the TIRR (The Institution for Rehabilitation and Research) Family Board, The TIRR Foundation Board (2005-2015), and participating as an Auction Chair and Committee Member of various schools in the Houston Metropolis. She also continues to pioneer the TIRR (2013) and Western Academy (2016) Auction. Alongside her husband, Kristin was awarded the Remembrance Day named “Kristin and Raul Abello Day” by Mayor Annis D. Parker of the City of Houston.

Since thriving through her TBI experience, Kristin has made it her life’s mission to share her story with the world. She is passionate about changing the narrative of the TBI community from a somber song to more of an upbeat melody. She wants survivors, their families, and/or friends who have lived through a TBI experience to know that a positive perspective can change even the bleakest of experiences.

In 2002, while on a training run in Houston, Texas, with her husband, Raul, in preparation for the Marine Corps Marathon, author Kristin Abello was struck by a car. As a result, she sustained a traumatic brain injury and other physical traumas. The initial consensus was that she wasn’t going to survive. In Sunrise, she tells her story of faith, love, hope, and healing from TBI. While a love story, it is also the true story of her fight for survival. She and Raul were a young couple in love when the catastrophic car accident nearly pulled them apart.

In “Sunrise,” the author tells how the support and prayers of her husband, family, and friends formed the basis of her miraculous recovery.
