Vince DeOrchis was born in 1949 in New York City. He went to Fordham College and Fordham University School of Law, and ultimately joined his father’s law firm in Manhattan. He has been a practicing maritime lawyer in New York City for over four decades. He was also one of the founders of the International Maritime Law Seminar, which takes place each year in London and Singapore.
He was on the Board of Directors for the U.S. Maritime Law Association, and was an advisor to the U.S. State Department during the negotiations of a new international convention to regulate the carriage of cargo by sea called the Rotterdam Rules. He has also participated as a briefing judge in the Judge John R. Brown National Moot Court Competition involving maritime law students, and was a Sims Distinguished Practitioner and Residence lecturer at Tulane University School of Law in the maritime law department.
“Devil’s Eye” by Vince DeOrchis follows the story of Nizar, a seventeen-year-old boy, and his little sister, Rima, who seek to escape the horrors of war-torn Syria. With no family to seek help to, their only hope is to reunite with their estranged cousin, Sayid, who lives in the USA. Unknown to them, Sayid, their only hope, developed covert ties with an extremist group.
The twins sneak onto a ship headed for New York in Spain by hiding inside a container. When the ship runs into an intense storm, the siblings are exposed to a cargo of lethal gas. Following an extremely dangerous journey, Nizar and Rima find themselves embroiled in a widely publicized legal proceeding pertaining to a terrorist attack on an aircraft headed towards New York.
Joe Barrett, a young and somewhat unconventional lawyer, is unexpectedly drawn into the investigation as he tries to fathom how the two young stowaways were exposed to the sarin gas aboard the containership. With help from Dalia, a quick-witted bartender, he unravels a plot that endangers the lives of those in the New York courtroom involved in sentencing the terrorist.
This compelling legal thriller’s main theme is the unwavering pursuit of justice over insurmountable obstacles and perilous opponents. It also focuses at the idea that people have to work their way through a labyrinth of morality, loyalty, and dishonesty in order to uncover the truth, and that the law may be both a weapon and a shield.
The story also explores the effects of unrestrained authority and the extent people will go to in order retain secrets safe, emphasizing the constant conflict between security and freedom in today’s world full with threats from around the world.
