Mildred Thayer Carneal grew up in Ohio and enjoyed all the pleasures and pains life had to offer. But it was when she entered the third grade that she realized how she could express herself through the magic of poetry.
Her first poems, starting around third grade, had innocence yet captured an early understanding of what was important to her at such a tender age. As she grew older, the poems took on more mature subjects but still remained easy to read. Her life took on more meaning and substance, and therefore, her poetry did too. She began including religion and world events in her small, thoughtful poems.
Written over fifty-eight years, from 1954 to 2012, “Poetry and Thoughts” reveals Carneal’s life from childhood through adulthood by using anecdotes, thoughts, and poetry. Her words reveal a diverse perception and a keen attention to detail, and each section is filled with vivid imagery.
