“SOS: Save Our Seas” by Renate Schalk Schreiner was nominated for the 2024 Eric Hoffer Book Award

The US Review of Books recently announced the much-awaited results for the 2024 Eric Hoffer Book Award.
“SOS: Save Our Seas” by Renate Schalk Schreiner, published by Author Reputation Press, was one of the nominees for the 2024 Eric Hoffer Book Award. It was commended by Nicole Yurcaba of the US Review of Books, highlighting that “The book’s diverse cast of characters shows the importance of taking the time to learn about others, no matter how different others might be from oneself. Gorgeous, colorful illustrations bring these lessons to life. The carefully constructed rhyme schemes not only make the book fun to read aloud but can also be used to teach young readers the beauty of language and words. Thus, the book becomes a fun adventure for readers of all ages, particularly for those who love the sea and have a special place in their hearts for the ocean and its inhabitants.”
Eric Hoffer Book Award honors the memory of the great American philosopher Eric Hoffer by highlighting salient writing, as well as the independent spirit of small publishers. Since its establishment, the Hoffer has become one of the largest international book awards for small, academic, and independent presses.
The US Review of Books supports the Eric Hoffer Project by publishing the results of the annual Eric Hoffer Award for Books. The Eric Hoffer Award is judged by a separate panel, under the direction of the Eric Hoffer Project.
Renate S. Schreiner was born in Poland, and in 1945 her family moved to the west of Germany. She became a kindergarten teacher after she graduated. In 1964, she migrated to the United States and worked as a Montessori teacher in Wisconsin, where she worked for many years.
The author learned that one of the children’s favorite subjects is animals through reading their stories. She then later used that knowledge to create Olli stories, this time going into the ocean to introduce a new animal world to young readers. While learning about these creatures, they will be entertained with rhyming stories and wonderful pictures.
“SOS: Save Our Seas” is a children’s book that contains stories about Olli, his guppy pals, and more new friends to have fun with. There are starfish, jellyfish, a dolphin, and her baby, and even a bee. When Olli meets Dorado, he finds out that not everyone speaks the same language. One of their teacher’s great concerns is the trash humans leave behind at the beach, and they all want to do something about it. Find out their plan to solve that problem and how it can help keep the ocean clean. All creatures will be thankful.
