“Jennifer held her breath, listening for Randy. She counted the roaring waves going in and out—five, six, seven. That is the big one. Why hasn’t Randy called? The crashing waves are so noisy. Maybe I can’t hear him. She looked into the waves expecting to see him swimming, but there was no sign of him. If she was going to get around the rocks, and if they could find the treasure and then get back before the tide came in, he’d better call her pretty soon. Maybe I should just go ahead on my own, she thought. Maybe he’s hurt or something. How long should I wait? This was a crazy idea.”

Best friends Randy and Jennifer are confronted with that very question in “Pure Luck.”
“Pure Luck” is a story that all began with the metal detector they received for their twelfth birthday. The two old coins they find on the beach lead them on a fantastic treasure hunt, ending in a treacherous cave at the edge of the ocean.
They enlist the help of a trusted teacher to retrieve the chest they find there. Assailed by rising tides, a storm that floods the cave, and an injury leaving their trusted teacher with amnesia, the two best friends soon find themselves in a pickle, trying to juggle all their secrets.
It was pure luck that they found the treasure chest, but now Jennifer and Randy are asking themselves: Was that good luck or bad?
